When considering website accessability, do not rely on colors alone.

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

When considering accessability, a website viewed without color should still contain understandable text & graphics.  The background & foreground of a web site should contrast enough in color to make them distinctive.  Consider that the user may be viewing them on a black & white screen.  This may seem like a very small detail to consider, but color diferences will help out immensely.  Remember, when you are creating a accessable website there are many different degrees of restrained users.  Many associate accessability with a handicap, this is not always so.  The situation may include someone who has a slow connection, a black & white monitor, no mointor at all, they may not be able to view pictures, they may have to work in an area where noise around them is too much to be able to hear a website.  These are just a few scenarios to keep in mind.  We look forward to learning more about accessability to offer another valuable feature to our website development.  All the while helping others.  That is what our business is really about, whether helping your business grow through a website, building a website for a non-profit orginization, or whether we are able to help foundations financially through the success of our business.  This is what drives us

One idea can change the world.

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Take Google, a prime example of a great idea that can trully change the world. A couple of innovative guys see the internet & take the opportunity.  They create a search engine early in the game that is easy to use, just what the user needs & wants.  What is better than their success is their plans for the business.  Google.org talks about various foundations that Google donates to & supports.  They hope to have just as much success in their google.org website as the original.  That is amazing.  In today’s age, it is not often that you can find a giving attitude such as this.  A business who uses it’s resources for good, to take on the problems of the world.  The wonderful part about all this, is that they do have the power to make a difference.  At Effect Web Media, Inc. we share teh same vision.  We work for our clients to produce a product that is an asset to their business.  The motive backing our hard work is helping others.  Google’s success makes me realize how small our efforts are, yet how we are the same.  We are simply doing what we can just as they are.  It just happens to be on a very different scale.  The fact is, that when we do what is right & do what we can to teh best of our ability, we are successful.  We may only be able to help change the world on a small scale, but it means everything to us.  We stand behind our word, we stand behind our work.  It is very encouraging to read the positive changes an empire like Google is making.  There is goodness in the world, we intend to keep it alive.

For website accessibility always provide equivalent visual & auditory alternatives.

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

There are many different ways to accomidate accessibility on the web.  One major way of doing this is through text equivalent.  This subject has been touched on before, below points on specific ways to accomplish this.    Every item on a website that is non-text, pictures video, icons, etc should have a text equivalent.   Below are some examples for HTML use:
 For example, in HTML:

  • Use “alt” for the IMG, INPUT, and APPLET elements, or provide a text equivalent in the content of the OBJECT and APPLET elements.
  • For complex content (e.g., a chart) where the “alt” text does not provide a complete text equivalent, provide an additional description using, for example, “longdesc” with IMG or FRAME, a link inside an OBJECT element, or a description link.
  • For image maps, either use the “alt” attribute with AREA, or use the MAP element with A elements (and other text) as content.

Once again, this is just one way to accomidate to restricted users, but it is also very beneficial.  At Effect Web Media our clients & their customers are of utmost importance.  This is just one more aspect we can add to our company to help others & that is gratifying to our team. If you are interested in a personal relationship that will benefit you as a person aswell as your company, you may just be our next perfect client.

There are two general themes that will ensure a graceful transformation making content navigatible & understandible.

By following two basic guidelins when developing an acccessible website, you will benefit most constrained users. To make the tranformation more graceful follow guidelines such as these.  Presentation & structure should be kept seperate.  Text should be used whenever possible, or text equivelants.  You can create documents users can receive even if they cannot hear or see; provide information that is equivelant to video or audio & will serve the same purpose.  This does not mean that you will have to prerecord every page of every website for a blind person who may some across it.  There are programs available for the blind, such as Screen Reader which much like it sounds, basically reads a screen of text to the user.  It cannot read text that has been imbedded into graphics on a webpage.  Text is quicker loading & better for search engine results for a website overall anyways.  It is also helpful if documents are created that do not require any type of special hardware.  To make the website easily navigatible & understandable consider these tips.  Text should be easily understood, & the website should easily guide the user through it.  These are some tips that every website developer should implement, not just someone trying to accomidate accessability.  There should be obvious navigation tools that will easily direct the user that may otherwise be confused by icons & pictures used for navigation.  These are just a few tips that can make the internet experience much easier & enjoyable for a user with constraints.  Our goal at Effect Web Media is to implement these typed of practices in all of our websites.  Usability is a part of the foundation that builds our quality websites.  We enjoy working with clients that feel the same way.  Clients that are in business for their customers aswell as themselves.

Consider accessability when developing a website.

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

When a web developer builds a new website they must keep accessability in mind.  You must consider that the users may be view the context very differently than yourself.  Take a few of the following examples: They may not be able to mover or hear or see well if at all, they may not be able to use their hands as they may be driving or in an environment where the noise around them interfere, they may not know the language the website is in.  These are a few examples, there are many other ways a person may be limited to the way they can view a web site.  While there are so many situations to consider, typically any way a website can be made more accessible, will benefit multiple groups and also limited users as a whole.  An example of making a website more accessible is this, some users may have slow internet connection, or may not be able to view images at all.  Guidelines to accomidate users such as this do not suggest to cut out pictures in design but instead offer text equivalents to the images.  For instance, if a website has a picture of a car & the picture is simply for decorative purposes then the text equivelant may be: A picture of a new car.  However, if the picture were a link to learn more about the cost or how it works, the text may direct the user to click here to learn more about pricing or parts etc.  In order for the accessability feature to be useful, the text should convey the same purpose the picture is there for.  Using text also can make the pages load faster for the user.  This is one simple way to benefit many different situations users may run into while on the web.  It is important to make websites useful to everyone.  This is just one new aspect Effect Web Media is beginning to research so that we may broaden our services and also help more people through the internet.

Innovators know how it’s done

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

In a recent article I read how Google has paid out large sums of money to other companies buying advertising, & of course YouTube. The amounts of money being exchanged are staggering to me! One thing is for sure, Google & those involved such as MySpace are innovators & that I can appreciate. We would like to consider ourselves innovators in the web site development department. Although the financial figures cannot even begin to compare, the principle of standing out from the crowd remains. Effect Web Media enjoys doing our best & doing it differently than some may expect. Our clients are priceless to us.
