On real company that has started diving into this new frontier is Reebok. Users on Second Life can purchase Reebook shoes for their user avatar. These Reebok shoes are not actaul shoes, but 3D accessories for their virtual world character.
Imaginary products cost real money. “Linden” is the name of Second Life’s monetary unit. Users actaully purchase Lindens via credit card.
Virtual products for online alter-egos seems to be taking off. Second Life Consumers can buy anything from pets to lapdances. It will be intereting to see how retailers utilize this market in the next few years.
